The Twenty-Fifth

Why Goa Does Christmas Properly

Most of India treats Christmas as a day off. Goa treats it as the event of the year — and that difference is the whole reason to come here for it rather than anywhere else in the country.

Through December the churches are lit, nativity cribs appear in homes and village squares, paper star lanterns go up over doorways, and kitchens turn out kuswar: bebinca, dodol, neureos, made in quantities that assume visitors. Midnight mass on the twenty-fourth fills the old churches at Old Goa and across Bardez and Salcete. None of this is put on for tourists. It is simply what happens.

What follows is ten villas for the twenty-fifth — eight in Goa, and two on the Mahabaleshwar plateau for anyone whose Christmas involves a fire rather than a beach. Six of them are rated a perfect 5.0 by our guests. And one thing worth knowing before you read on: Christmas week is usually cheaper than New Year, often considerably, and the villas that are gone for the thirty-first are frequently still open for the twenty-fifth.

Villa 01 of 10

Seaview Serenade

North Goa · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.04 BedroomsSea View

Seaview Serenade holds a perfect 5.0 from our guests, which almost nothing does. Four bedrooms, a private pool, and the view the name promises — which at Christmas, when the light goes soft by five, is the reason to be on this coast rather than any other.

It suits the shape most Christmas trips actually take: one family, or two that travel well together, somewhere comfortable enough that nobody feels they need to go out. Book it for the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth rather than the thirty-first, and the rate is a different conversation entirely.

Villa 02 of 10

Casa Canto

North Goa · Rated 5.0 · Pet Friendly

Rated 5.04 BedroomsPet Friendly

Christmas is the one holiday nobody wants to leave the dog behind for, and Casa Canto is the villa that solves it. Rated 5.0, four bedrooms, private pool, and dogs genuinely welcome rather than tolerated.

It is also among the better-value villas on this list, which matters when the trip is already long. Tell us when you enquire that a dog is coming — a few more villas than carry the label will take one on request, and we would rather widen your options than narrow them.

Villa 03 of 10

Villa Zaia

North Goa · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.03 BedroomsBest Value

Not every Christmas is a crowd. Villa Zaia is three bedrooms rated 5.0, and it is the one we recommend for a single family who want the holiday without the logistics of organising twenty people.

A private pool, a kitchen that takes a meal package, and a rate that leaves room in the budget for the parts of Goa you came for. Of everything on this list it is the easiest to book late — smaller villas move differently from the big ones over Christmas week.

Villa 04 of 10

Igreha — Villa F

North Goa · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.04 BedroomsPortuguese Quarter Feel

Igreha — Villa F carries a 5.0 and the kind of facade that explains why people come to Goa at Christmas rather than in March. Four bedrooms, private pool, and architecture that belongs to the place rather than to a catalogue.

Goa at Christmas is a Catholic state doing the thing it does best — the churches lit, the cribs out, kuswar in every kitchen. A villa with this much character is the right base for a trip where the point is the town as much as the pool.

Villa 05 of 10

Castello — Villa 3

North Goa · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.03 BedroomsPairs Next Door

Castello — Villa 3 is a 5.0-rated three-bedroom, and the detail worth knowing is that it does not stand alone. Castello — Villa 5 sits beside it at the same rating.

That matters at Christmas more than at any other time of year, because Christmas groups are families that have grown — parents, siblings, children, in-laws — and eighteen people are often happier in two villas next door to each other than in one large one. Ask us about both on the same dates.

Villa 06 of 10

Silvio — Villa A

North Goa · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.03 BedroomsQuiet

Silvio — Villa A is the quiet one on this list. Three bedrooms, 5.0-rated, a private pool, and the sort of living room that gets used rather than photographed.

Take it if the plan for the twenty-fifth is lunch that runs until four and nobody going anywhere afterwards. That is what most people actually want from Christmas and what the brochures least often describe.

Villa 07 of 10

Sacri Borod Hill 5

North Goa · Rated 4.9

Rated 4.95 BedroomsHill Setting

Sacri Borod Hill 5 is five bedrooms rated 4.9, set up off the coast road where the hill keeps the noise out. For a larger family Christmas it is the balance point on this list — room for everyone without stepping up to a party villa.

Its neighbour Sacri Borod Hill 8 shares the same rating and the same hill, so two branches of a family can take one each and still eat together on the twenty-fifth. Enquire about both together rather than separately.

Villa 08 of 10

Villa Azul

North Goa · Rated 4.8

Rated 4.85 BedroomsOutdoor Space

Villa Azul is five bedrooms rated 4.8, and it is on this list for the outdoor space. Christmas in Goa is spent outside — long lunches, children in the pool, somebody falling asleep in a chair at three.

A villa with a lawn and a pool that both work at the same time is harder to find than it sounds. This is one. Take it if the group is ten to fourteen and the plan is to not leave the property for most of the day.

Villa 09 of 10

The Chimney Cottage

Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra · Rated 5.0

Rated 5.04 BedroomsCold Nights

If your idea of Christmas involves a fire rather than a beach, go up instead of across. The Chimney Cottage is rated 5.0 on the Mahabaleshwar plateau, and it is named for exactly the thing you want in late December.

Plateau nights are genuinely cold from November to February — which is the point. Three hours from Pune, five to six from Mumbai, and no flight in the plan. One practical note: ask us whether the pool is heated before you book, because at that altitude in December it decides whether anyone swims.

Villa 10 of 10

Serenity Hills

Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra · Rated 4.8

Rated 4.86 BedroomsValley Side

Serenity Hills is the larger hill option — six bedrooms on the valley side above Mahabaleshwar, rated 4.8. For a family Christmas of twelve who want cold mornings and a view rather than sea air, this is the one.

It also sits inside Satara district, alongside our villas at Panchgani and Wai, so if it is taken on your dates there are genuine alternatives within forty minutes rather than a different state.

Christmas in Goa

What Actually Happens

Midnight mass, the twenty-fourth. The old churches at Old Goa — the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral — and parish churches across Bardez and Salcete. Go early if you intend to sit. Dress as you would for anyone's church.

Kuswar. The Christmas sweets: bebinca in its many layers, dodol, neureos, kulkuls. Bakeries and home kitchens start weeks ahead. Ask your villa staff where theirs comes from and you will get a better answer than any shop.

Cribs and stars. Nativity scenes in homes and village squares, often elaborate, and paper star lanterns hung over doorways through the month. Driving through a village after dark in late December is its own reason to be here.

Consoada. The Christmas Eve meal, eaten after mass or before it depending on the family. If your villa is doing a meal package, this is the night worth planning properly — agree the menu a few days ahead.

And the quiet bit. The twenty-sixth through the twenty-ninth is the calmest stretch of the whole season — the Christmas crowd has gone home and the New Year crowd has not arrived. If you can travel then, it is the best-value week in Goa all winter.

Frequently Asked

What You Need to Know

Where is the best place to spend Christmas in Goa?

North Goa if you want the churches, the markets and the restaurants — Bardez, Candolim and the Assagao side. Old Goa if the Basilica and midnight mass are the reason you are coming. South Goa for quiet beaches and long lunches. Our North Goa villas and South Goa villas all have private pools.

Is Christmas a big deal in Goa?

It is one of the largest celebrations in the state's calendar. Churches are lit through December, nativity cribs go up in homes and squares, kuswar sweets — bebinca, dodol, neureos — are made in quantity, and midnight mass on the twenty-fourth fills the old churches. If you want a Christmas that feels like one, this is the part of India to be in.

Is Christmas cheaper than New Year in Goa?

Usually, yes, and often by a good margin. The twenty-third to the twenty-sixth sits just before the peak, and the villas that are impossible to get for the thirty-first are frequently available for Christmas week. If the budget is tight, this is the single most useful thing to know.

How far in advance should I book for Christmas?

Two to four months for Goa. It is less brutal than New Year, but the best-rated villas — the 5.0s on this page — go first. Send us dates and a headcount and we will tell you honestly what is still open. Message us on WhatsApp.

Can we bring a dog?

Yes at some villas. Casa Canto is the one on this list that welcomes pets outright, and more villas accept a dog on request than carry the label, since each owner decides. Tell us when you enquire.

Do all the villas have a private pool?

Yes. Every villa in the Stay Ananta collection has its own private pool inside the property, for your group alone, with no shared access and no time slot to book. We have not listed a property without one since 2017.

Are the pools heated?

In Goa it does not matter — the water is comfortable in December, which is why the coast fills while the hills empty. On the Mahabaleshwar plateau it matters a great deal in late December; heating is a paid add-on at several villas, so ask us about the specific one before you book.

Can we have Christmas lunch cooked at the villa?

Yes. A meal package is available at every villa, cooked on site by the villa's own chef and charged separately from the tariff, at a set rate per person per day. For the twenty-fifth specifically, agree the menu and the headcount a few days ahead rather than on the morning.

What if we want the hills instead of the beach?

Mahabaleshwar is the answer for a cold Christmas without a flight — The Chimney Cottage and Serenity Hills are both on this list, and the wider Mahabaleshwar collection runs across the plateau and down to Wai.

How do I check availability and book?

Open any villa on this page — its own page carries a live calendar showing which nights are free and the rate for those dates, and takes the booking directly. Or send us your dates and headcount on WhatsApp at +91 9115127778.
